Le GRID : Groupe de Recherche sur les Institutions Disciplinaires
Ce carnet rassemble des historien.ne.s travaillant sur des institutions dites disciplinaires (école, armée, prison, asile, hospice…) et partageant la même volonté : prêter une attention aux expériences des individus et questionner ensemble les différentes composantes de l’archipel institutionnel qui se déploie en Europe à partir du XIXe siècle. Les travaux collectifs du GRID (Groupe de recherche sur les institutions disciplinaires) se déclinent entre un séminaire consacré aux circulations institutionnelles et un groupe de travail centré sur la question des punitions en institution.
Le séminaire « Entre les murs, hors les murs. Revisiter l’histoire des institutions disciplinaires », organisé à l’université Paris 1, explore en 2017-2018 le thème des mobilités. En analysant les circulations des populations et des pratiques, ce séminaire est l’occasion de mieux comprendre la place que les institutions occupent dans les trajectoires individuelles, et plus généralement dans l’économie de la prise en charge des personnes à l’époque contemporaine.
Le groupe de travail porte quant à lui sur « La micropénalité en institutions en Europe aux XIXe et XXe siècles ». Il prend les punitions comme objet et comme point d’entrée dans l’étude comparée des institutions. La pratique punitive constitue en effet un continuum dans l’administration des populations encadrées, et de ce fait, permet de réfléchir aux points communs et aux spécificités de chacune des institutions.
Ce carnet a pour principal objet de donner une visibilité aux projets du GRID – séances de séminaires, colloques, journées d’études. Il est également conçu comme un outil de recherche permettant le partage de compte-rendus de séances et renforçant les liens entre les membres du séminaire et du groupe de travail. Il s’adresse plus généralement à tou.te.s les historien.ne.s travaillant sur les institutions disciplinaires, notamment à travers la mise en ligne de bibliographies et la tenue d’une veille portant sur les publications relatives aux thématiques abordées.

GRID: Disciplinary Institutions’ Research Group
This research website gathers historians specialized in the history of « disciplinary » institutions (school, army, prison, asylum, nursing home…). We share the same goal of taking another look at the history of institutions by paying attention to individual experiences and investigating the set of institutions emerging in Europe since the XIXth century. This team work is divided between a seminar dedicated to institutional mobilities and a working group focused on the question of institutional punishments.
The seminar « Inside the walls, outside the walls. Revisiting history of disciplinary institutions », organized by the university of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, explores in 2017-2018 the theme of mobilities. It analyzes circulations of individuals and practices, through admissions, releases or transfers between institutions. It aims at understanding the role of circulations, both in the shaping of individual trajectories and more generally in the management of institutional care.
The research group is dedicated to « Micropenalty in institutions in Europe, XIXth-XXth centuries ». It considers punishments both as an object of study and as an angle for a comparative study of institutions. The practice of punishment is a continuum in administrating people in institutional care. It allows us to investigate the resemblance and specificities of each institution.
This research website serves the purpose of offering visibility to events organized by each of those groups. It is also conceived as a research tool allowing us to share academic material and reinforcing the bonds between members of the seminar and members of the research group. It is more generally addressed to all historians working on disciplinary institutions, in particular through online bibliographies and an « actualities » section inventoring recent publications.
